Do 02.06.22 | | Ivy Circle Berlin: Documentary film at the Babylon + Drinks Beschreibung »Dear Alumni School Leaders and Friends,
As summer approaches we awake to warmer weather, brighter skies and good cheer.
The Ivy Circle in Berlin has a series of summer events planned beginning with an invite on Thursday, June 2, 2022 to the theatrical release of the documentary "The Strait Guys" at the legendary Babylon Theater in Mitte.
A cocktail gathering along with the cast and crew of "The Strait Guys" takes place just before the film release between 6pm-7pm at The Grand, Hirtenstraße 4, 10178 Berlin. (This quirky place supposedly has been in business since 1842).
So... meet first at 6pm at The Grand for complimentary appetizers and wine (open cash bar for anything other than wine) and at about 7ish pm make our way on foot (3 minutes) to the Babylon Theater to catch the premiere of "The Strait Guys."
Written and directed by Columbia alum(and IvyCircle friend) Rick Minnich, "The Strait Guys" tells the story of American and Russian entrepreneurs trying to link the USA and Russia via the world's longest train tunnel beneath the Bering Strait. Following the film, Rick and one of the Russian producers (who has since fled Russia and whose name is redacted from our release) will be available for a Q&A session. Post film we meet for an "after party" back at The Grand.
While wine and appetizers are complimentary at The Grand before and after the film, tickets for the film can be purchased in advance at https://babylonberlin.eu/film/4696-the-strait-guys-der-traum-vom-tunnel?fbclid=IwAR1Uy4XsSf5zkthTOHbmhkyGRk-Eq_QAXBQu1BP6x5r8M4z4KY52gS3-Ll8 or at the box office at the Babylon theater on the night of the release.
RSVP to carl@alumni.princeton.edu for a head count or further information. Friends and family are welcome.
To a great summer!

Sa 04.06.22 | | Exclusive guided tour: “Renoir Rococo Revival – Impressionism and the French Art of the Eighteenth Century” at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt Beschreibung »Dear Alumni, dear Friends,
The first highlight at Frankfurt’s Städel in 2022 is devoted to the master of Impressionism and his passion for the Rococo – Pierrre-Auguste Renoir. The exhibition “Renoir Rococo Revival – Impressionism and the French Art of the Eighteenth Century” will show a total of some 120 outstanding paintings, works on paper and handcrafted objects from international museums as well as private collections.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir is one of the outstanding painters of French Impressionism – and far more than that. For the first time the Städel Museum will be addressing the surprising references in his art to Rococo painting in a large-scale special exhibition.
Whereas Rococo painting was considered frivolous and immoral after the French Revolution, it underwent a revival in the nineteenth century and was widely visible in Renoir’s lifetime. Trenchant juxtapositions of Renoir’s art with works of the eighteenth century as well as his own contemporaries – Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet and Berthe Morisot – will provide an overview of Impressionism’s intense artistic examination of the Rococo.
We cordially invite you to a guided tour exploring the “Renoir Rococo Revival – Impressionism and the French Art of the Eighteenth Century” at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt on Saturday, 4 June 2022 at 2:45 pm.
We will meet at the Foyer of the Städel Museum at Schaumainkai 63, 60596 Frankfurt am Main (website) at 2:15 pm, 30 min ahead of the tour to allow time for cloakroom and distribution of entrance tickets, so that we can start the tour on time. Please keep in mind that it is the last weekend of the exhibition and thus the museum will be very crowded.
Please register by Thursday, 2 June by completing the online registration form. We encourage you to sign-up early, as we allocate places on a first-come, first-served basis.
The guided tour is free of charge for members of the German Friends of LSE. The participation fee for non-members is €10, which we ask you to transfer to our bank account DE57300700240612018200, reference: Renoir Städel Museum 2022. Alternatively, you can also pay by Paypal to paypal.me/GermanFriendsofLSE. Please state your name and Renoir Städel Museum 2022 as reference.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Frankfurt.

Mo 12.12.22 | | Munich: U.S. - China relations in light of the Ukraine war Beschreibung »
An evening with Elihu Professor of History and Global Affairs at Yale and bestselling author Arne Westad
Moderated by Ambassador Eric Nelson, Associate Director, George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies
The Russian aggression against Ukraine began at a time when global tension was already running high.
What will the effects of the war be on relations between the United States and China, a relationship deemed by many to be key to future peace and stability? Will the Chinese leadership continue its de facto backing of Russia? And will Russia’s leaders accept a subservient relationship to China as a price they have to pay for the war?
Professor Westad will discuss these issues in light of lessons from history.
Odd Arne Westad is Elihu Professor of History and Global Affairs at Yale University and the author of The Cold War: A World History. Originally from Ålesund on the Norwegian coast, he studied history, philosophy, and modern languages in Oslo before doing a graduate degree in U.S./international history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Westad has published 16 books, most of which deal with 20th century Asian and global history. He joined the faculty at Yale after teaching at the London School of Economics (LSE), where he was School Professor of International History, and at Harvard University, where he was the S.T. Lee Professor of U.S.-Asia Relations. At Yale, he teaches in the History Department and at the Jackson School for Global Affairs. Westad is a fellow of the British Academy and of several other national academies, a visiting professor at Peking University, and a research associate of the Harvard Fairbank Center.
Moderation: Ambassador Eric Nelson, Associate Director of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. With over 30 years in diplomatic service, Eric has served as U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia-Herzegovina (2019-2022) and is a member of the United States Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor. Amongst his many previous postings are Director of the Office of eDiplomacy in the Bureau of Information Resources Management, Deputy Chief of Mission in Costa Rica and Consul General in Munich. As an Ambassador-in-Residence, Eric contributes a Department of State perspective to the Marshall Center’s mission.
Theater im Amerikahaus Munich, Karolinenplatz 3, 80333 Munich
Admission is free, but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. To register CLICK HERE
After the event there will be a reception and the opportunity to have your books signed by Prof. Westad
